In the world of interior design, trends come and go, but there’s one classic pattern that seems to stand the test of time: the checkerboard tile. This iconic look has graced floors and walls for decades, evoking a sense of nostalgia while also feeling relevant today. I won’t lie, it’s definitely having an undeniable moment right now. So, like with any design trend, mastering the checkerboard tile pattern requires a thoughtful approach. In essence, you really want to ensure it enhances rather than overwhelms or dates your space. It’s definitely possible with a few key tricks. But like anything in the design world, this sort of thing is very subjective. This really is just my opinion on the matter, so take what lands with you and definitely leave the rest if you tend to disagree. It is your home after all and you are the one that needs to love it.

The checkerboard pattern’s timeless appeal lies in its versatility. Whether you’re aiming for a vintage vibe or your aesthetic leans on the more modern side, I love that it can be adapted to suit a variety of styles. But striking the right balance seems to be key. I feel like too much of this particular pattern can sometimes feel a little chaotic. To avoid this, try to use the checkerboard design as a focal point in the space, keeping the rest a little more subdued. It really does like being the star. Plus, going this route ensures you aren’t jamming too many trends (even if they are rooted in timeless elements) into a single room.

Alternatively, you could play with various colours and tones to get the look you’re after. While the classic black and white combo is eternally elegant, I personally love a more subtle palette. Soft greys and tone on tone marbles can feel calming, all while remaining timeless in their own right.

Additionally, the size of the tiles plays a significant role in the overall impact. Larger tiles tend to create a more modern feel, while smaller ones evoke a cozier ambiance. I, personally, like to land somewhere in the middle. Very Goldilocks, I know. But I find the medium-sized scale doesn’t demand too much attention, all while still adding interest. An art!

Lastly, material matters here. This wouldn’t be the place to scale back. Go for the real tumbled limestone, the honed marble or the hand-made terracotta. They’ll patina beautifully over time and I assure you that you won’t regret it.

You may have noticed that scalloped home decor has popped up everywhere lately, almost seemingly out of nowhere. From benches to bowls to window treatments and beyond, nothing is safe from the scalloped treatment. And honestly? I’m here for it. For many reasons – but mostly I love how it brings an element of playfulness and femininity into a room.

That said, when it comes to anything that feels “trendy” I would try to incorporate scalloped home decor in a restrained manner. A picture frame here, a beautiful pendant light there… just a few pieces to help a space feel current without, eventually, screaming 2023. In a world that often feels dominated by sleek lines and monochromatic palettes, a new trend has quietly emerged: the patterned quilt. It’s where form meets function, adding warmth, depth, character, and a touch of nostalgia into our lives. You may have noticed that quilts, once lovingly associated with ones grandmothers’ cozy abode, have made a remarkable comeback in the world of interior design as of late. These textile treasures are finding their way into spaces far and wide, adding a beautiful layer I simply can’t get enough of.

From stripes to floral, to bold to subtle, there are so many varieties to consider. As people seek to create more meaningful spaces in their lives, I love that these beauties provide a tangible connection to our past. Their ability to tell stories, to add texture and interest, all while providing comfort is right up my alley. There is, however, an art to incorporating a patterned quilt into your design scheme as not all are alike. I mean, it can be easy to quickly veer grandma instead of chic. That said, I’m sharing a few very beautiful quilts I’m personally loving below. And when in doubt, pair it with otherwise neutral bedding – you truly can’t go wrong.

After years of things veering on the warm side (read: lots of browns, beiges and camels), dusty blue interiors are once again gaining popularity in the world of home decor, and for good reason. This versatile shade of blue can add a touch of serenity and sophistication to any space.

One of the benefits of dusty blue is its calming effect – I simply can’t get enough. This muted shade of blue has a soothing quality that helps create a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere in any and every space. It makes it an ideal choice for bedrooms, bathrooms, and wherever relaxation and tranquility needs tk rein queen.

I’ve always been partial to dusty blue interiors as they work well with a wide range of colour schemes, from neutral palettes to bolder hues alike. I love that it pairs beautifully with soft greys, warm beiges, and crisp whites. And, as a cooler hue, it helps balance all of the warmth we’ve been seeing in abundance as of late, which I’m very much on board with. I’m loving seeing it pop up more frequently lately; here are a few great examples…
