When we decided to embark on our kitchen renovation late last year, we figured that we’d take the opportunity to replace the hardwood floors throughout the main floor of our home as well. They were in pretty dire shape and, admittedly, in need of some serious love. And since we were already replacing our floors, we felt like we might as well repaint… Since we were repainting, it seemed like a nice chance to give our beloved living room a bit of an update, too. I think you can see where this is going, ha. This is what I affectionately refer to as “scope creep”. It’s real and it happens every time.

If you’ve been reading for a while, you may remember that we tackled our living room as part of the One Room Challenge a number of years ago (here!) And that version is still a space that I adore to this day. But as our lives have evolved, so too has our living space. It has gone through a few minor itterations over the years since bringing our daughter into the world, but this recent living room update has been the most dramatic. And it’s been a really lovely treat.

We ultimately kept all of our main furniture pieces, with a few minor iterations, and really just updated the finishing touches. “New” art, new toss cushions, and a couple “new” accessories is really all it took. I’ll never cease to be amazed by how much of a difference these changes make… And I love that it provides continued proof that starting with a neutral base layer is a great way to design your space. It provides so much opportunity to tweak and edit as life ebbs and flows, without having to start from scratch.
We recovered our couch with a more family friendly and forgiving fabric (this one! we love it!!) And that was really the biggest expense. I shopped our home for the gallery wall (hence the “new” art), and the accessories too. The candelabra wall sconces were found in my mom’s basement (she swears she bought them at Ikea in the 80’s, but they’re SOLID brass and quite substantial, so I have my suspicions). The soft ottoman was an update we made when our daughter became mobile. And the rest remains the same – pieces I still love as much today as when we got our hands on them almost seven years ago now. All this to say, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed making these small but meaningful changes, and it’s something I highly encourage. I just love loving on our home. I’m always curious about someone who buys a sofa online. Does it meet expectations or is it too stiff or soft or deep or shallow or anything else. So did this sectional work for you? What info did you take into consideration before you bit the bullet and placed the order?
These are very good questions! I’ve purchased quite a few sofas online and haven’t had any issues so far. My biggest tip would be to only purchase from a company that has a solid return policy though. I like to do a ton of research before hand, always making sure to read reviews and comments etc etc – but you’re ultimately taking a risk! Most companies that provide sofas online do accept returns – and they make it pretty easy and seamless if it isn’t quite right
